What is a spinal cord stimulator?

A  spinal cord stimulator is a type of treatment for people with chronic back, arm, and leg pain who are not responding to other therapies and injections. It is a device that is composed of electrodes, a small generator, and a remote control. This treatment involves surgically placing a device in your lower back that will send mild electrical pulses to your spinal cord to treat your pain. The remote control allows you to control the electrical impulses that are sent. It is called the pacemaker of the spinal cord.

The treatment is reversible, does not change the anatomy unlike spine surgery, and is cost-effective in the long run. It is also a great alternative to taking addictive drugs, such as narcotics, for pain control.

Prior to deciding on having a permanent placement of SCS, there is a test trial done to determine if this is the treatment that helps your pain and it is right for you. This treatment has been performed successfully on thousands of patients for over 40 years globally and the cost is covered by most insurance carriers.

Who is a Candidate for the SCS?

The SCS is typically for patients who have chronic pain and is not responding well to other forms of therapy. This treatment can be helpful for those who have experienced the following:

  • Chronic leg or arm pain (sciatica)
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Arachnoiditis and failed back syndrome
  • Phantom pain and any neuropathic pain
  • Peripheral neuropathy, etc.

During your appointment at Arora Pain Clinic, the Doctor would discuss with you whether this type of treatment is right for you.
