What is Pes Anserine Bursitis?

Pes anserine bursitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the bursa, a jelly-like sac located between the skin bone and the three tendons of the hamstring muscle around the inner, upper area of the knee. This condition happens when the bursa becomes irritated and produces too much fluid which results in swelling and pressure on the knee, causing pain and discomfort. 

Symptoms and Causes

There are several symptoms and factors that cause pes anserine bursitis.Some of the symptoms of pes anserine can include: 

  • Pain on the inside of the knee and/or center of the shinbone
  • Pain during exercise
  • Pain when climbing up stairs 
  • Pain when getting up from a chair
  • Tenderness and warmness on the inside of the knee

Additionally, some of the causes of pes anserine include: 

  • Overuse or constant friction and stress on the bursa
  • Excessive exercise 
  • Tight hamstring muscles 
  • Overweight
  • Knee arthritis
  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury
  • Incorrect training techniques (e.g., not stretching prior to exercise)
